Creating products: from catalogue product to your own SKU

14 min readUpdated

A product in your dashboard is your own version of a product from our catalogue: with fixed options, your design and your own SKU. We use that SKU to recognise every order, whether it comes from your store, the API or the dashboard. In this article you create a product step by step and learn what your file needs and how to set your retail price and margin.

In this article

What is a product at Printen.eu?

Your product consists of a few parts that together define exactly what we need to make. As soon as an order with your SKU comes in, we know which product, which options and which design belong to it.

From catalogue product to order.
  • Catalogue product: the base product from our catalogue, for example a poster, canvas or mug.
  • Options: the fixed choices, such as size, paper type and finish. Your end customer does not choose these; they are fixed in your product.
  • Design: your print file.
  • SKU: your own product code. It must be exactly the same as the SKU in your store.
  • Title, description and retail price: for your own overview and for importing into your store.
  • Mockups: product images for your store, added in the dashboard under Images or through the API.

How do I create a product?

The new product form. The Preview is shown on the right.
  1. Start a new product

Go to Products and click New product.

  2. Choose a catalogue product

Type what you are looking for in Search for a product, for example "poster", and click Search. Click Choose next to the right product.

  3. Fix the options

Under Options you see drop-downs, already filled in with the default values. Choose what you want to sell for each option, such as size, paper and finish.

  4. Upload your design

Under Design, click Upload design and select your file. Check the file requirements first.

  5. Choose your SKU

Under SKU, enter your own product code exactly as it appears in your store. Read the SKU tips if you do not have a system yet.

  6. Fill in the rest

Enter a Title and Description and, optionally, Your retail price (euros, optional). Check the Preview on the right.

  7. Save

Click Save product. The product now appears in your list with the status Active and can be ordered by SKU straight away.

How do I save a design from the editor as a product?

If you prefer to design directly on our product page, you do not need a separate print file. From the design editor you save your design with all chosen options in one go as your own product with a fixed SKU. Before you save, you see what you pay us per item.

In the editor under Design and then Save.
  1. Choose product and options

Log in with the account you use as a reseller and open the product in our shop. Choose size, material and finish exactly as you want to sell them.

  2. Design in the editor

Open the design editor and finish your design.

  3. Open the save block

In the editor, go to Design and then Save. Below Save to my account you find the Reseller product block. Click Save as reseller product.

  4. Check SKU, name and price

The SKU is already filled in with the product name and a short code. Feel free to change it; it must be unique in your account. Fill in the Product name and your Selling price in your shop (EUR, incl. VAT).

  5. Check your purchase price

We immediately calculate Your purchase price per item: the consumer price minus your discount, excl. VAT and shipping. If this combination of options cannot be ordered right now, you see it straight away and choose other options.

  6. Save

Click Save. We create the print file in the same way and at the same quality as for a regular order. The product then appears under Products, with the preview of your design as the first image.

How do I edit a product or create a variant?

Products you saved from the editor stay editable. Under Products, each product has the buttons Edit in editor and Create variant.

  1. Open the editor

Click Edit in editor on the product. The product page opens with your saved design and options.

  2. Change your design

Change whatever you like in the editor.

  3. Update the product

Go to Design and then Save, click Update reseller product and then Update. The SKU stays the same.

  4. Ready for new orders

New orders for this SKU now use the new print file. Orders that were already placed are made as they were ordered.

An option that changes the size, such as dimensions or orientationThe print file is not copied, because it would not fit.Open the variant with Edit in editor and save it. Until then, orders wait for a file.
The SKUEach variant gets its own SKU.Use exactly the same SKU for the variant in your shop.

What requirements does my design need to meet?

A good file prevents delays and disappointed customers. These are the main requirements. The details can differ slightly per product; through the API you find them per product in fileRequirements.

RequirementWhat we askWhy
File formatpdf, png or jpgWe process these formats reliably. The dashboard upload also accepts webp, but for print we recommend pdf, png or jpg.
ResolutionAt least 300 dpi at the final sizeLower values give a blurry or grainy print, especially at large sizes.
BleedUsually 3 mm on all sides, depending on the productThis prevents white edges after trimming.
ColourCMYK; RGB is also fine for canvasBright screen colours (RGB) can print slightly duller.
File URL (API)A public https URLWe fetch the file ourselves for production.
  • Keep important text and logos away from the edge, with a safe margin inside the trim line.
  • Using a photo from the internet or a low-quality image? Check its size in pixels. For an A2 poster (42 x 59.4 cm) at 300 dpi you need about 4961 x 7016 pixels.
  • Convert fonts in PDFs to outlines or embed them.

How do I add mockups?

Mockups are product images that show how your design looks on the product. You use them in your own store.

  • Via the API: when creating or updating a product, include the mockupUrls field, a list of up to 10 public https URLs to your images.
  • WooCommerce plugin: with Import my Printen products the plugin brings your mockups along as product images. See Connect WooCommerce.
  • Other stores: upload your mockups to the product in your store yourself.
Add mockups via the API
curl -X PATCH https://www.printen.eu/api/reseller/v1/reseller-products/POSTER-A2-MAT \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer prk_live_..." \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"mockupUrls":["https://jouwwinkel.nl/mockups/poster-a2-voor.jpg","https://jouwwinkel.nl/mockups/poster-a2-sfeer.jpg"]}'

How do I add my own product images?

Good product photos sell. You can add up to 10 images of your own per product. We send them along when you publish to Shopify, WooCommerce or Etsy, in the order you choose.

  1. Open the images

Under Products, click Images on the product.

  2. Upload

Click Add images and choose one or more files: jpg, png or webp, up to 10 MB per image.

  3. Put them in order

Drag the images into the right order, or use the arrows. The first one is the Main image in your shop.

  4. Remove what you do not want

Click the trash icon below an image to remove it.

  5. Update your shop

Click Update in ... to send the new images to your connected shop as well.

  • Mockups with free tools: in Canva the mockup feature puts your design on a poster, mug or shirt in a lifestyle scene. Photopea runs free in your browser and opens mockup templates in psd format.
  • Photograph a proof copy: real photos in daylight give your customer the most confidence.
  • Main image: the whole product on a calm, light background stands out best in your shop’s search results.
  • Size: square and at least 2000 x 2000 pixels gives a sharp zoom view in most shops.
  • Rights: only use photos and mockup templates you are allowed to use commercially.

How do I choose a good SKU?

The SKU is the key between your store and Printen.eu. When an order comes in, we look up the product by its SKU. A clear system prevents mistakes.

  • Up to 64 characters: letters, digits, dot, hyphen and underscore. Start with a letter or digit.
  • Unique within your account.
  • Exactly the same as the SKU in your store, including upper and lower case.
  • Our advice: capitals and the structure product, size, variant, for example POSTER-A2-MAT.
SKUGood or notWhy
POSTER-A2-MATGoodClear: product, size and variant.
CANVAS-40X60-SEAGoodSize and design name at a glance.
MUG-WHITE-LOGO01GoodColour and design number are easy to tell apart.
poster a2 matNot goodSpaces are not allowed.
POSTER/A2Not goodA slash is not allowed.
POSTERNot practicalOnce you add a second size, you no longer know which variant it is.

How do I set my retail price and margin?

You pay us the consumer price of the product minus your reseller discount, plus shipping. You set your retail price yourself. The Your retail price (euros, optional) field is only for your own overview and for importing into your store; it does not affect what you pay us.

Worked exampleAmountNotes
Consumer price€30.00 excl. VATIncluding all selected options.
Your discount (10%)− €3.00Starting tier; see discounts.
You pay us€27.00 excl. VATPlus shipping.
Your retail price€49.95 incl. 21% VATWhat your customer pays in your store.
Retail price excl. VAT€41.28€49.95 divided by 1.21.
Gross margin before shipping€14.28€41.28 minus €27.00.
  • This is an example. Actual prices differ per product, per option and over time.
  • Deduct shipping from your gross margin. It depends on the destination country and is shown in the quote.
  • Request a quote through the API (POST /quotes) to see the exact price, discount, shipping and VAT for an order in advance.
  • Include your own costs too, such as the transaction fees of your store platform and payment provider.

How do I activate, change or delete a product?

Under Products you see all your products with image, title, SKU, catalogue product and retail price. If you have connected a store under Connections, each active product has a Publish to ... button that adds the product to that store as a draft. Once it is there, the button reads Update in ....

ActionHowResult
